Gratitude Letter Worksheet

Issues in relationships often stem from a problem with communication. Communication is a critical part of a healthy relationship. Without proper communication skills, it is difficult for a couple to work together as a team and resolve issues.

Good communication skills are important both during the good times and the bad times. People often think that having communication skills for the challenging parts of a relationship are most important, but that is not the case. Having communication skills to express appreciation for one another is also important for a healthy relationship.

About This Worksheet

This is the Gratitude Letter worksheet. This worksheet is an exercise that helps promote gratitude in a relationship. With this worksheet, a couple in counseling is encouraged to express their gratitude for one another. The exercise helps reinforce the bond in the couple, and teaches methods of expressing appreciation for qualities in the relationship.

The Gratitude Letter worksheet is intended to be used for adults in couples counseling. Adults who are seeking therapy for their relationship, marriage, or for coparenting can benefit from this exercise.

Instructions

Sit with the couple and explain how communicating appreciation for each other can be beneficial for their relationship. Be sure to reinforce that healthy communication skills should be practiced regularly, and expressing gratitude for each other can strengthen the bond between partners.

Provide each partner with a copy of the worksheet. Allow them time and space to write a gratitude letter to each other. Instruct the couple to not share the letter with one another until they are together in session. When each partner has completed their letter, allow them to share their letters together in therapy. Take time to reflect on the experience with the couple, and discuss methods of creating a routine for gratitude in their communication.
