Rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) is a form of therapy that can be very effective in helping clients. It offers a means to gain perspective on challenging situations. REBT suggests that the way people understand situations causes them to be reactive.
The concept of REBT implies that a situation is neither positive nor negative. A situation itself is neutral, but the way a person perceives a situation is what causes negative thoughts and behaviors.
Albert Ellis, founder of REBT believed that if beliefs and perceptions of challenging situations can be targeted, negative behaviors and consequences can be modified. With this belief, he created the ABC model of REBT.

This is the ABC Model for REBT worksheet. This worksheet breaks down Ellis’s REBT theory into three levels: Activating event, Beliefs, and Consequences.
This worksheet provides a brief explanation of REBT. It also provides an exercise that helps clients work through the ABC model. For each level, the client is asked reflection questions to learn how to challenge their negative beliefs.
This worksheet is a great resource for adults in therapy. It can be used in individual and group settings.
Before assigning this worksheet, explain the concept of REBT to your client. Explain how it can be helpful to challenge negative beliefs to create less oppressive consequences.
Review the contents of the worksheet with your client. Instruct them to complete the reflection questions for each level. Offer assistance if the client appears to be struggling.
When the client has completed the questions, review the results and reflect on how changing beliefs can change outcomes. Explain how the process on this worksheet can be applied to situations outside of therapy. Provide a copy of the worksheet to your client for reference.
