I recommend virually all the books listed here as an effective adjunct to counseling. They are great resources and are expecially helpful as part of the counseling process. Alone, they may not prove as effective. Please keep in mind that books, by themselves, are never a substitute for counseling. That said, the books listed below can provide knowledge, insight, coping skills and inspiration.

One of my favorite poets and a true visionary regarding men's issues. Using the Grimm Fairy tale "Iron John" as a vehicle, Bly explores the myths and cultural underpinnings of a distinctly vigorous male mode of feeling, a combination of fierceness and tenderness long since sacrificed to the demands of the industrial revolution. How To Practice
by The Dalai Lama
As a primer on living the good life, few books compete with How to Practice, another profound offering from the exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Westerners may be confused by the book's title, assuming that it focuses solely on Buddhist meditation and prayer techniques. Though it does address meditation and prayer, at its core this is a book that demonstrates how day-to-day living can be a spiritual practice.

Advise On Dying

"Everyone dies, but no one is dead," goes the Tibetan saying. It is with these words that Advice on Dying takes flight.
